A resolution was adopted by the Continental Congress on November 10, 1775 authorizing the creation of two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore. On that same date Samuel Nicholas set up shop in Tun Tavern in Philadelphia and began recruiting those who wanted to be Marines thus officially creating the United States Marine Corps.
